The instrument is of eastern origin, probably Mongolian but was very popular in the ancient middle eastern civilizations. The name violin comes from the Greek word vitula. The musicians who I have been meeting and photographing for the last one year has more to think of than just music. Playing on the streets and attracting the law keepers is in itself a big challenge. While normally the policemen do not prevent the musicians from playing, it is not so legal to earn money like that. In a way, that act becomes very similar to peddling or hawking, and hence illegal.

The 34th annual Castro Street Fair on October 7, 2007, was again a fun filled liberated gathering of people. The mood was progressive, and although primarily around alternative expressions, there were a lot of small time traders making some quick sales.
