I shall talk about props in a bit. In this picture, two devotees of Hindu Goddess Kali are spending a quiet moment on a joint. They spent an hour, intermittently smoking & sharing niceties & talking of various philosophical aspects of life!

The device they use is called a “Chhileem” in the local language & very similar to a local cigar. Rudimentary in construction, this tiny device could deliver a serious shock to anyone not used to the raw smoke of tobacco.

They were a little hesitant for me to take their pictures. Their concern came from being ill-advertised to the younger generation. Although smoking from these “Chhileems” and similar cigars are restricted to finding the special type of tobacco, they are widely spread amongst the devotees’ population along the Ganges.

While doing a few studio shots in Connecticut, the model, an old gentleman had given me a great deal of information on props for studio shots using Cigars

He had mentioned some famous Smoke Shops that feature some of the finest Cohiba cigars, Macanudo cigars and all other major cigar brands. These are some of the finest & available online at http://www.famous-smoke.com/. So anytime I have a studio photo shoot with a cigar smoking model, I know where to order some!

The image above is shot on a Nikon D200 with on camera speedlight set on -2 ev & using a wide angle lens.

There is no confirmation or news around such releases from Nikon though. Usually, European communities are one of the first to get their hands on any pre-release testing, but this time, the photo communities in EU are not quite sure either!

I could think of the people behind this website of Musicnation.com to be no less than cheap and have no respect for either the music or the musician. The 34th annual Castro Street Fair on October 7, 2007, was again a fun filled liberated gathering of people. The mood was progressive, and although primarily around alternative expressions, there were a lot of small time traders making some quick sales.

From beads, to buckles, to straps and leather, there were everything to be found. A few very talented photographers and artists also put up their stall. Last but not least, there were abundant food and beer and music.

I have been posting a few unique images from the San Francisco’s 24th annual Folsom Street fair held last weekend. Amidst the hundreds of parade goers, participants, leather aficionados, there were the hoteliers and caterers that kept the energy going. With abundance of food, grilles and chilled beer, the restaurateurs had a lot to offer.

The busy pair stopped for a moment to pose for the camera. Photographed on hand held Nikon D200 with fill in flash on Lexar Pro media card. A few of these images will be uploaded on the Projects section of Photoduniya.com.

This is a DX format sensor, with the benefits of the improved auto focus mechanisms of the Nikon D3. It still uses the battery from Nikon D200, the EN-EL3e, which is known to have a very poor battery life.

Priced at about USD 1,900, the body is expected to hit the US & UK markets in November 2007, the same time as the D3.

PHOTOduniya Projects – Preface

From time to time, various facts of life inspire us to think more, to dig deep and find some meaning. Often the pictures give a message and sometimes they just becomes memories. Whatever be the situation, each provide an inspiration to explore. Many a times, my readers would prompt me to think! And then to take up my camera. It’s always interesting to have a new perspective on the same subject, or sometimes, if I am fortunate, have a new subject or composite altogether.

The current projects that I am working on are detailed below. The usual duration of a project is about six to eight months and often involve many people behind the scenes.

Artists, some true from their hearts, and some plain simple cons, the streets fledge with a monsterous combination of artists. From painters, to jazz players, from jugglers to psychic readers, San Francisco streets boast a varied collection of vendors each striving to make a living. This series plans to put together a collection of street artists and their art. Body Art – Tattooes, Piercings and Styles (0707-001) – Drawing Board

This project is still in the Drawing Board or otherwise known as the conception phase. I got interested in the intensity of emotions and sometimes the story that always go behind a body ornament – be it a piercing, or as permanent as a tattoo. This will also cover other decorative styles of body art. This is strictly an aggregation of body art work and I shall maintain indifference to any of the cult or religious implications of such an ornament or art work. Faces always reveal more than a person. And a cosmopolitan like San Francisco has ample opportunities. The pictures are often unrelated and are shot all over San Francisco.
